[May] May Day is the traditional scene for the month of May (novel concept isn't it?). May Day is a holiday to honor and promote fertility, as it basically marks the beginning of the growing season. This painting shows the more courtly aspects of the holiday. Each person is bedecked in green, and with crowns of various foliage. The building in the background is the Palais de la Cite, in Paris. The Palais de la Cite is still standing.
