The Bowyer Chronicles

Rob Hammond's Use of Purpleheart

Added 21 May 2005

Through this web site, several aspiring bowyers have sent me their thoughts and experiences as they first begin to make bows. I think that their experiences - their successes and their failures - can be helpful to other aspiring bowyers. Rob's comments on his first bow and a caution about the use of purpleheart wood for a bow are below. If you would like to add your own story to The Bowyer Chronicles, please feel free to contact me.

I'm working on the belly now. My measurements are a few mm bigger than recommended. I figured its best to take off wood if necessary. Also I have tapered the belly into the handle section without a noticeable riser like in your plans. We will see what happens. The belly still needs alot of work before I can really get into the tillering process (wont flex more than an inch or so each end by hand). One thing ive learned so far is that if you work with purple heart be prepared to sharpen your plane/spokeshave a lot!
