Mods to THE BEAST: My 1998 GMC Sonoma Highrider

Smittybilt Bumper Thumper

This page is mainly designed for folks on the ZR2 discussion list, to show what mods I have made to my truck. You can join the discussion list by sending the word "Subscribe" (without the quotes) to mailto:zr2@zr2hr.org.

The Bumper Thumper (BT) I got was model number C55BM. The C55BM fits my truck, but I later found out that it is actually designed for '94-'97 ZR2's, not '98-'00 ZR2's. I believe that the correct part number for the newer ZR2's in C48BM (black, modular). At any rate, like I said, the C55BM fits my '98 Highrider. It seems to sit rather low however, meaning that the top bar seems a tad bit lower than it probably should be, but I still think it looks great.

The installation was rather easy, despite the rather poor instructions included with the Bumper Thumper.

    A couple of recommendations:

  1. When bolting the brackets to the frame using the tow hook bolts, only remove one of the tow hook bolts, get that bolt started, then remove the other bolt and rotate the BT bracket into place. I found it rather difficult to thread the bolt through the tow hook, at least with only two hands.

  2. I decided it would be easiest to bolt the BT to the the frame bracket with one bolt on each side then rotate the BT up into place. DO NOT DO THIS!!! Like an idiot, instead of taking the BT off and trying a different way, I got out the scissor jack and force rotated it up into place, seriously marring my bumper. It's a good thing I don't care about my paint job! Place the BT over the bumper, then bolt the BT into the frame bracket. You might have to bend the front skirt a little bit to do so.

  3. When mounting the L brackets to the top of the bumper, I found it easiest to remove the grill, as it provided easier access to the underside of the bumper (from the top).

  4. If you have lights that you want to mount onto your BT, do so when you are installing the BT, as you can use the top bumper mounts to ground your lights. It is a pain to remove the bolts for the top bumper bracket to ground your lights.

Here is a pic of my truck with the BT installed.

If you're in the Tucson area, drop me a line and we can go wheelin' sometime.

Speaking of which, if you own a Highrider/ZR2/BlaZeR2, or want to find out more about the best little 4X4's around, check out these great sites:

There is also a ZR2 discussion group, which is very fun for talking about our special trucks and in getting ideas, help, and useful information. I have learned a great deal from the list.
